SINGLE REVIEW: Motel FM – Horse Named Veil

‘…an intense and intelligently crafted anthem that keeps the listener firmly on their toes…’

Based out of Merseyside and formerly known as Honey Motel, Motel FM are a four-piece alternative rock outfit that have been making moves since early last year. Carrying themselves with a degree of mystique, the band released their debut (and now eponymous) EP in February of this year, showcasing a deeply interesting jazz-coded spin on arena-sized alternative rock.

Now returning with their brand new name and a brand new single, Motel FM are making a case for being the next massive band in alternative rock. ‘Horse Named Veil’ is an intense and intelligently crafted anthem that keeps the listener firmly on their toes; the tempo never settles, slowing through a dreamlike post-chorus, before revving upwards towards a bombastic climax.

Despite the constant change of pace, the track never feels disjointed; cohesive and cinematic throughout, dirty riffs give way to simmering atmospherics, whilst melodic hooks effortlessly reel you in thanks to the distinctive intensity of vocalist Freddie Griggs. Lyrics spark with an electrifying and lustful sense of tension, desperately clamouring for the attention of somebody you really, really should not want, delirious in pursuit.

There is never going to come a time where alternative rock is not a saturated genre, so it takes something special to stand out amongst the crowd. Motel FM have that special quality, and plenty more besides; ‘Horse Named Veil’ is a monstrously good time from start to finish, indicative of a band with a clear understanding of the rules of alternative rock, and how best to break them.

Motel FM could be huge.
