‘…a distinctive sound, brimming with wit and character, produced with an impressive degree of quality…’
Based out of Manchester, snorkelling have been carving out their position within the north-west England emo scene for approximately a year now, taking to the stage with fellow grassroots icons such as Vienna, Ugly Jumper, and Gambling With Dogs. At long last, these efforts have been translated into the studio, with snorkelling’s debut single, ‘cat’s eyes’.
The UK emo scene is in an incredibly strong place currently, yet what snorkelling offer on their debut single is perhaps the best example thus far of an emo outfit with a truly British feel to them. The twinkly guitar riffs and whimsical lyricism are present and accounted for, but delivered with a scrappy late 00’s indie rock flair; imagine perhaps Origami Angel via Scouting For Girls.
The result is a brilliantly energetic and infectious affair that is as suited for sweaty basement gigs as it is house parties, as the band duck and weave through alternating rhythms and rambunctious, snappy choruses. snorkelling even offer a brief surprising moment of melancholic beauty with the restrained bridge section, layering subtle brass elements into the mix to truly round out their sound.
snorkelling have executed everything perfectly for a debut single; ‘cat’s eyes’ demonstrates a distinctive sound, brimming with wit and character, produced with an impressive degree of quality. So often as it may be reiterated here, the matter remains true: with bands like snorkelling about, there has never been a better time to get involved with the UK emo scene.
