‘…places tyra jay firmly on the map of alternative pop talents that deserve your attention…’
Emerging from Manchester, singer-songwriter tyra jay has already been on quite the journey before releasing a single track. Having spent several years in rehabilitation for vocal damage, debut indie rock anthem ‘lighthouses’ is the culmination of this hard work, and a testament to jay’s willingness to overcome obstacles.
Inspired by her experience reconciling a relationship she is desperate to have work with her poor mental health, ‘lighthouses’ is a wonderfully atmospheric affair that aligns moody modern pop sensibilities with a gritty grunge flair. The rhythmic backbone is robust and grounded, driving forwards with a simple yet strong bass line, whilst guitars shimmer with a nostalgic beauty.
jay herself is a wonderfully understated presence throughout, delivering gently infectious melodies with a hushed tenderness that works beautifully in tandem with the track’s heavier grunge sentiments. She exists within her song as a character desperately at war with themselves, reaching out from the crashing waves towards a loving hand, yet also paralysed by the fear she may pull them into the depths.
It all makes for an excellent debut single that is indicative of an artist whom has been hard at work on her craft in spite of perilous circumstances. ‘lighthouses’ makes for essential “October canon event” listening, and places tyra jay firmly on the map of alternative pop talents that deserve your attention.
