‘…a cross-generational quality about it; a timeless blend of classic metal and modern heavy, culminating in a devilishly enchanting sound…’
Coalescing back in early 2022, Bristol’s Calvaria have been prolific in their haunting of the UK alternative metal scene. Releasing their debut EP, ‘The Prophecy’, in 2023, the four-piece have toured relentlessly, accruing an impressive number of headline shows for a blossoming band; the gothic outfit even managed to reach the grand finals of Bloodstock’s Bristol Metal 2 The Masses.
Building upon this success, Calvaria look to release a brand new EP in the coming year, and have recently unveiled the lead single of this project. ‘Ghost’ opens with beautifully ethereal harmonies, unfurling like smoke, before immediately getting to the business of laying down cinematic, prog-toned riffs. Moments of sonic spaciousness are anchored to the mortal realm by an arena-sized rhythm department, the rousing rumble of drums punctuated by thick, steadfast bass notes.
A ceaseless ebb and flow between hauntingly romantic verses and bold, soaring choruses is executed beautifully by the band; a tug-of-war between freedom and obsession spiralling atop of a tense, dramatic waltz. Vocals effortlessly swing between hushed murmurs and biblical melodies, intermittently backed by ferocious screams. It is a remarkably grandiose and theatrical affair for a band of this size, and one can only imagine what time and resources will enable this gifted act to achieve.
Calvaria’s music contains a cross-generational quality about it; a timeless blend of classic metal and modern heavy, culminating in a devilishly enchanting sound that appeals to not only those who like their metal heroes with big personalities and even bigger hair, but also those who like them masked up and anonymous. As the nights grow darker, ‘Ghost’ will make the perfect addition to your listening rotation.
