SINGLE REVIEW: Knives – VERMILLION

‘…the statement of a band ready to explode, an undeniable heavyweight of the heavy scene in the making…’

Bristolian sextet Knives have been bending the rules of genre since 2022. Flirting with ideas from post-punk, hardcore, jazz, nu-metal, and many, many more scenes, the band have found themselves to be emerging cult favourites within alternative spaces. The band toured the UK alongside mathcore mavericks The Callous Daoboys back in February, and have since released the second part of their debut album rework, ‘REGLITTER II’. Now, Knives look forwards with the announcement of their 2027 sophomore record, ‘Nothing New Under The Sun’, and accompanying in this is a contender for Song of the Year in the form of ‘VERMILLION’.

“Immense” does not even begin to come close to effectively ascertaining the sheer magnitude of this anthem; even at only a little over two minutes in length, the track feels nothing short of apocalyptic to experience. Dance-punk revelry collides with hardcore degrees of aggression to produce an utterly relentless onslaught of the senses, roiling continuously with an addictive and electrifying energy; the band sound on the verge of self-combustion.

Vocalist Jay Schottlander is a monolithic presence, dominant in the midst of the searing riffs and cataclysmic rhythms. He serves as an inquisitor of the soul, questioning what worth a life holds without remaining true to your morals. Vocals shift and contort with a venomous wrath, at times barking, at times screaming, at times snaking with gravelly distortion. He becomes a figure in ceaseless pursuit of punishing truth.

As difficult as it may be to believe, 2027 is just around the corner, and whilst there still remains approximately three months of 2026 releases to relish in, Knives have cemented their upcoming record as one to hotly anticipate in the coming year. ‘VERMILLION’ is the statement of a band ready to explode, an undeniable heavyweight of the heavy scene in the making. Their future is burning bright.
