SINGLE REVIEW: Career Day – Last Good Day We Get

Based across New York and Philadelphia, Career Day have been producing “people’s pop-punk” since 2018. Part of We’re Trying Records, the band share a roster with tenmonthsummer and Swiss Army Wife, and represent yet another entry in the latest generation of emo inspired bands that deserve your attention.

Their latest single, ‘Last Good Day We Get’, is no-frills pop-punk in all of the very best ways; it firmly belongs on the soundtrack of a cult-classic PS1 skateboard game, being played in a basement whilst cheap takeaway pizza gets demolished. Scrappy, high-octane riffs dance with accomplished guitar melodies, cruising by on a rhythmic bed that never lets up the momentum.

Vocal melodies start out simple and infectious, but are gradually and wonderfully embellished by punchy harmonies that lend the whole affair a wickedly rambunctious and spirited feel. The small moments of joy selfishly snatched whilst the apocalypse peeks through the gap in the curtains are brought to life through Desmond Zantua’s defiantly optimistic yet honest lyricism and delivery; he has no answers on how to fix the world, but he knows that loving as hard as you possibly can is essential through it all.

Career Day offer a fun and vulnerable slice of pop-punk that avoids the trappings of irony-poisoning that so often plagues the modern emo scene. It is deeply refreshing to listen to a band capture both the importance of optimism and the weight of modern existence, all with a deeply human sense of earnestness. This is what emo is all about.
