SINGLE REVIEW: sharpened.lives – as resistance comes to be

Mainz’s sharpened.lives may only have released two singles this year, but 2026 has felt incredibly vital for the trio. The band’s last single was entitled ‘doompunk’, but that is now a label that the band have thoroughly embraced; an ethos that they and their fans can live and die by. It has truly felt as though the outfit have found their identity.

Regardless, sharpened.lives are a band that thrive by their refusal to stick to a single style or approach, and that continues to be a case with this latest bristling banger. Taking heavy influence from hardcore, and weaving shimmering emo melodies into the midst of that chaos, ‘as resistance comes to be’ is as grandiose as it is ferocious. Crushing grooves are gouged out by ruthless guitar work during the verses, thrashing about with cathartic violence. This frantic chaos coalesces into glittering emo melodies, a deep breath before plunging back into riotous hardcore brilliance.

The two-pronged attack of optimism and anger that a successful anti-fascist movement requires is brought to life through the direct lyricism, delivered with explosive energy. Vocalist Alex Loeb sounds better than ever, delivering their screams and growls with richness, depth and power; it is incredibly clear that time and effort has been taken into honing their craft, and the progression is a delight to behold.

The doompunk movement holds only the brightest promise with incendiary anthems such as this. sharpened.lives remain excellent at keeping you on your toes, never doing what is expected of them, and the result is one of the most exciting bands emerging from Germany right now. The world can be a better place, you just have to get a little doompunk with it.
