SINGLE REVIEW: Unless – Sun Gone Low

Without playing a single note, Unless are a trio that already stand-out; this newly formed supergroup has simply incredible post-hardcore pedigree. With band members that have appeared in Underoath, Norma Jean, mewithoutYou, and The Chariot, the promise of this outfit is immense, and the band’s debut single does incredibly well at fulfilling that promise.

‘Sun Gone Low’ is a hypnotic indie-rock flavoured affair that swirls and snakes with an intense, ephemeral beauty. Guitars coalesce from nothing into patterns of glittering repetition, drawing shapes atop of surprisingly robust grooves carved out from intricate drum work and sturdy bass lines.

Weaving in and out of this dense tapestry of sounds, Bryan Taylor offers a moody and subdued vocal performance, guided by the fluid song structure. The melodies are subtle yet compelling, existing alongside the intricate instrumentation as another beautiful texture in a sprawling delight for the senses.

It could have been so easy for these musical titans to have simply written another post-hardcore anthem, but instead Unless have clearly challenged themselves, and created a gorgeous and tasteful experimental number. Of course, future releases will answer whether the hype is to be believed, but it is difficult to think of a better start for the supergroup than ‘Sun Gone Low’.
