‘…the sound of a band pushing back against the tide and expanding their boundaries, regardless of what the world around them might say…’
It’s already been a year of solid releases from Ohio-born, Georgia-based indie rock outfit Noise Beneath The Floor. January’s ‘waning’ saw the band harnessing their witty punk side, whilst March’s ‘car’ offered a beautiful yet whimsical anthem for freedom. Now officially launching their as-yet-untitled LP3 era as a three-piece, the band continue to one up themselves with the cinematic ‘opening a door’.
Perhaps the most apt descriptor for this track would be ‘complete’; this is the sound of NBTF at their most cohesive and clear, arriving at a creative destination that they have long endeavoured for. The elements are simple; steady rhythms, gentle acoustic melodies, and light synth work. How these elements coalesce, however, is remarkable to experience, occupying a glowing yet melancholic sonic space.
The dual vocals of Gavin McIntire and Jade Marié make for a truly gorgeous combination, McIntire’s feathery melodies backed by Marié’s grounded harmonies as they conjure up gentle yet wonderfully infectious hooks. Drums loop through driving rhythms, whilst Naomi Bellerose occupies a central space in the song’s structure with the soft guiding grooves of her compelling bass lines. It feels perhaps as if it belongs on the soundtrack of an indie coming of age movie, anxious and playful.
For Noise Beneath The Floor, this new era represents living in spite of the odds; of pursuing creativity, art, and something meaningful in a world governed by profit margins, algorithms, and individualism. ‘opening a door’ is the sound of a band pushing back against the tide and expanding their boundaries, regardless of what the world around them might say. This could be the definitive NBTF era.
