‘…a beautifully whimsical country-emo anthem that necessitates a place on your summer listening rotation…’
Country has continued to develop something of a poor reputation amongst music circles; a lack of meaningful innovation, questionable political leanings, and a continual exclusion of those that don’t fit the genre’s mould has left many seeking to avoid the country genre at all costs. Truck, however, are here to offer even the naysayers a chance to rethink throwing out their boots and stenson. Based out of Cheltenham, the four-piece have been active since 2023, refining their blend of country, emo, and britpop to create something that sounds both delightfully familiar yet wholly refreshing.
The band’s newest release, ‘Your Life & Mine‘, is a perfect introductory step into their world, having already long been a staple of their live sets. A shimmering cinematic sunset of a song, sprawling guitars twang out glittering, lolloping melodies atop of a carefree and spirited rhythmic backbone. Punchy riffs in the post-chorus add an element of wonderful sharpness to the otherwise breezy track; the bittersweet dreaminess is never overshadowed, but only ever exemplified.
The vocals are gorgeously executed throughout, building from subdued, bluesy whimsy, towards a bridge of surprisingly powerful belted melodies; all of this is accompanied by splendid harmonies that only add to the impression that this track should play out over a movie’s credit scroll. The track is far from an instant hijack of the dopamine circuit, but instead a slow-burner that you will be belting out, full chest, from your 1960’s Chevrolet.
The degree of creativity and charm that Truck have cements them as one of UK emo’s most wonderfully fun new members. ‘Your Life & Mine’ is a beautifully whimsical country-emo anthem that necessitates a place on your summer listening rotation, especially as those glorious golden late summer nights start showing up. This town is absolutely big enough for the two of us, partner.
