‘…This is post-hardcore at its most classic, and many might argue at its most perfect…’
Anybody whom has frequented the Merseyside heavy scene over the past twelve months or so may well have already come face to face with Monroe.. The five-piece have been a popular selection for supporting act, with a compelling and often ferocious live presence backed up by tracks that carry real potential; fans of pure hardcore aggression and emo theatrics will find something to enjoy here. Finally, last month saw the band release their debut studio recording, ‘Strip Your Teeth.‘.
It may well be easy to mistake ‘Strip Your Teeth.‘ as being some long lost track uncovered from the early 00’s, and that is far from a negative. Bounding rhythms maintain a crackling energy that feels guaranteed to get you moving, whilst punchy, emo-tinged guitar riffs and a perfect combination of captivating, catchy melodies and raw, guttural screams are layered over the top. This is post-hardcore at its most classic, and many might argue at its most perfect.
The breakdown is utterly ferocious, with a simple, electrifying guitar riff building upwards, before crashing back down with monstrous screamed vocals and heavy bass fuzz. It all builds towards a final rousing chorus, which weaves in extra vocal lines, before fading out with an acoustic outro. It’s a particularly gorgeous touch to the track, hinting at the band’s capacity for variety, and giving the emotive weight of the lyricism a chance to truly be felt.
There are no guarantees, but Monroe. carry a certain energy, a certain indiscernible quality, that makes them feel primed to blow up within the alternative scene. ‘Strip Your Teeth.‘ builds upon the hype this band have generated through their live performances, with the track’s perfect balance of rawness and polish shining intensely with potential. You can easily imagine this song existing during the early glory days of post-hardcore, but you certainly cannot call it dated. Don’t be surprised if your favourite alternative band takes them on tour.
