SINGLE REVIEW: Syntara – Haze

‘…a brand new, melodic approach from the metalcore outfit, and the result is undeniably stunning…’

Late last year, north-west conceptual metalcore outfit Syntara released their double-single ‘The Mind’s Descent’, and showcased a ferocious talent in the making; impressive ambition combined with undeniable creativity, bolstered by juggernaut heaviness. Ahead of their May 2nd live collaboration with The Silver Chamber Orchestra at Manchester Academy 3, the four-piece have returned with a brand new single that continues to mark them out as worthy newcomers to the heavy scene.

A far cry from their usual technical and aggressive style, ‘Haze’ offers a brand new, melodic approach from the metalcore outfit, and the result is undeniably stunning. Twanging acoustics are threaded through dense layers of shimmering synths, roiling percussion, and warm vocal harmonies, as the band demonstrate a perfect understanding of how to decorate a simplistic backbone with elements of complexity without sounding overwhelming.

Matt Ellis continues to go from strength to strength as a vocalist, and watching this talent bloom is a genuine delight. The bittersweet yearning of the lyricism comes to life through powerful yet controlled melodies, emotive verses running in tandem with cathartic choruses in a perfectly constructed ebb and flow. Carried by the phenomenal musicianship that surrounds him, the chemistry between Syntara’s members is impossible to ignore.

Between their rigorous live performance schedule and willingness to push themselves, the boundaries for Syntara may only be those that they enact upon themselves; there is a voracious appetite for what this outfit have to offer, before even talking about the sheer quality of musicianship at play here. ‘Haze’ demands a place on your sad-boy summer playlists, whilst Syntara demand and deserve your mental real estate.
