‘…hope and joy can be found through our communities, our loved ones, and our sheer unwillingness to surrender; ‘tomar hashi, tomar naam (তোমারহাসি, তোমারনাম)‘, and tenmonthsummer as an entity, embody this deeply and resoundingly
Hailing from Chicago, tenmonthsummer have been honing their craft of hopeful, yearning emo for just over three years now. Their 2024 debut EP ‘fate lines’ offered a charming, twinkling listening experience that served as genuinely touching outpouring of adoration. That warmth has only continued to blossom with the band’s latest long-awaited release.
Translating from Bengali to ‘your smile, your name’, tenmonthsummer’s latest single serves as the sonic equivalent of the warmest embrace you could possibly imagine. A brisk, twinkle-emo anthem of adoration and appreciation, this glittering number commences with crunchy riffs that bounce forth atop of rhythms that exude pure joviality. The opening lyric of ‘warm rain after a cold December‘ is wonderfully indicative of tenmonthsummer’s sound and creative ethos, constructing hopeful, whimsical soundscapes that still retain a degree of expansiveness.
The track builds and builds with the fervour of an oncoming spring, weaving in shimmering math-rock licks as the percussion combusts and deconstructs with a delightfully celebratory feeling. The improvements in mixing and mastering compared to the band’s debut material is on full display here, with every element of this increasingly dense musical festival reverberating with a magnificent sense of energy and tangibility; you truly feel as though you have been transported into the world of tenmonthsummer, and everything will be alright.
It has been a long winter, and not simply because of the weather. Dark nights give way to dark days as the west seems hellbent on sliding backwards into division, fascism, and colonisation. Yet hope and joy can be found through our communities, our loved ones, and our sheer unwillingness to surrender; ‘tomar hashi, tomar naam” (তোমার হাসি, তোমার নাম)‘, and tenmonthsummer as an entity, embody this deeply and resoundingly. Their promise of an upcoming EP in spring is something emo fans must keep an eye out for.
