SINGLE REVIEW: Never or Now – Change Her Mind

‘…the ingredients are simple, but the presentation and delivery are deeply fulfilling; it’s the kind of song that is so easy to listen to again and again…’

Merseyside’s “losercore” four-piece Never or Now emerged last year with their debut single, ‘Alabaster Chambers’. Alongside that, the band have been racking up shows in their local scene, having performed at all of the staple grassroots venues, marking themselves out as yet another vital component of a flourishing UK emo scene.

Breezy and bittersweet, ‘Change Her Mind‘ is a a gorgeously composed work of emo that understands the benefits of keeping things simple. Jangly acoustic guitars strum away atop of a driving rhythm section, giving the whole track the foundation of hazy summer anthem, whilst noodling guitar licks are interspersed throughout to add just the right amount of musical spice to proceedings. The production and mixing are both delightfully executed, giving a real sense of depth to the otherwise twinkly track, enabling the gently groovy bass lines to truly glue all of the elements together and snag the listener’s focus.

Keeping in step with this creative ethos is a surprisingly soulful vocal performance that embraces your eardrums with warm silk. The themes of unrequited love are wonderfully expanded upon with the subtle desperation of the lyrics, and the melodies that conjure up a real sense of yearning and denial. Again, the ingredients are simple, but the presentation and delivery are deeply fulfilling; it’s the kind of song that is so easy to listen to again and again, without ever falling tired of it.

If ‘Change Her Mind‘ is “losercore”, then I don’t ever want to be a winner. Never or Now join the ever growing wave of UK emo bands climbing through the grassroots jungle that deserve and demand your attention; the glistening indie rock sound of this band is a welcome addition. In a similar vein to peers such as Vienna and Student Slasher Film, it feels like it is only a matter of time until your favourite band whisks them away on a career-changing tour; it remains a fantastic time to be a UK emo fan.
