SINGLE REVIEW: My First Time – Picture Of Health

‘…a sharply defined identity, fantastically observant and witty lyricism, and a darkly bombastic sound…’

Based out of Bristol, My First Time have been honing their craft since 2021, sculpting a high-energy post-punk adjacent sound that delivers scathing observations of the modern world, from masculinity to the fashion industry. Last month, the four-piece dropped their latest single, ‘Picture Of Health’, and mark themselves out as ones to watch this year.

Obsessive, impulsive, and hedonistic, ‘Picture Of Health’ is an absolutely filthy anthem for revelling in sin. Addicted to vapes and gambling, lusting for human connection, and obsessing over whatever the next trend peddled by influencers is, vocalist Isaac Stroud-Allen cuts the figure of someone wholly guided by self-gratification and neurochemical rewards. It’s a scathing satirical takedown that may might perhaps see themselves in.

Stroud-Allen’s sharp and wickedly fun performance is set against a pulsing backdrop of dance punk fervour. A buzzing synth hook snags itself beneath your skin as punchy, swaggering rhythms glitter with suggestions of dance-punk dopamine. A shimmering and subdued bridge almost permit a moment of introspection, before the track collapses in on itself with one final celebration of self-destruction.

With a sharply defined identity, fantastically observant and witty lyricism, and a darkly bombastic sound, My First Time feel primed to become your favourite indie publication’s favourite band; the kind of cult favourite post-punk adjacent outfit that will be called an “industry plant” when their hard work inevitably pays off tenfold. In the spirit of this song, think of the dopamine hit you will receive when you are ahead of the curve on the matter of My First Time. Get addicted now.
