‘…funky, swaggering synths and thumping percussion, moving ceaselessly towards the horizon as if turbocharged…’
Liverpool’s premier funk-punk fusion band are back with a brand new single. The Marigolds have been ripping down their insecurities and ripping up stages since 2020, and six years deep, that momentum shows no signs of slowing just yet. Following on from performances at Future Yard and Artefact, the band have unleashed a five minute behemoth of psychedelic punk wizardry.
With its bright keys, glittering synths, and shimmering vocal harmonies, there is something of an Electric Light Orchestra vibe to ‘Friends‘. Retro rock riffs crackle atop of dance-punk rhythms, whilst Joe Green delivers a subdued yet soulful vocal performance that sprawls through captivating, driving melodies.
The track culminates in a cruising instrumental climax that demands an open freeway and a sunset in your rear view mirror. Chunky bass lines give way to a bristling, playful guitar solo from Dan Kelly, whose old school guitar playing antics never fails to elevate The Marigolds’ music to the next level. The track rallies towards its dying moments with funky, swaggering synths and thumping percussion, moving ceaselessly towards the horizon as if turbocharged. It is brilliantly fun stuff to behold.
Perhaps that remains one of the tenets of The Marigolds’ secret formula that makes them so undeniably electrifying to behold; to have fun at all costs. ‘Friends‘ is a perfect encapsulation of what you can expect from this trio, and perhaps paradoxically the fact you can never truly know what to expect from them. The band look to celebrate this new release with a headline show at Liverpool’s Outpost on March 13th; give this track a whirl, and there is little doubt you’ll be booking the next train into the city.
