‘…Superfans of Williams will no doubt relish this, and those who enjoy bedroom pop, dream pop, and trip hop will find something to really get their teeth into…’
Despite Paramore being one of the biggest alternative bands of the millennia, it feels like only over the past decade that the band have been treated with the legendary status that they so deserved. Following the critically acclaimed ‘This Is Why’, the trio would go on to support Taylor Swift herself on the biggest tour of all time, before entering a period of quiet after ending their contract with Atlantic Records.
Whilst guitarist Taylor York remains enigmatically quiet, drummer Zac Farro and vocalist Hayley Williams took 2025 to work on solo material; the latter’s ‘Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party‘ would be deemed by many to be one of the finest releases of the year, with Williams’ portrayals of heartbreak and the expectations on women being utterly revered. Not content with resting on her laurels, however, Williams has kicked off 2026 by forming a brand new duo with producer and collaborator, Daniel James: Power Snatch.
Muted and melancholic, this is a far cry from what many may expect from a Williams fronted project. Looping drum machine beats are decorated with sparse, dour keys and vague allusions to guitars. Williams delivers deeply understated vocals that reflect the introspective, morose lyricism perfectly, opting to eschew any vocal acrobatic for hushed mutterings and wavering melodies.
‘HOLE IN THE CEILING’ layers Williams’ strangely eerie vocals atop of arpeggiated synths, gentle yet discordant guitars, and softly haunting saxophone textures; it’s an ethereal listening experience that keeps things just uncomfortable enough to prevent the hypnotic song structure from feeling boring. ‘DMs’ fluctuates between dreamy, stripped-back verses, and choruses crammed with distorted fuzz that seeks to make you ascend. It perhaps could do with a little more bite to cut through the indulgent soundscapes, but it’s certainly a well-composed, intricately crafted, and intriguing number.
It’s a dreamy and atmospheric EP, although it certainly isn’t going to be to the taste of everyone; this is clearly the sound of Williams and James experimenting, and the result does feel more like a first draft of something wonderful, rather than a stand-out new project. Superfans of Williams will no doubt relish this, and those who enjoy bedroom pop, dream pop, and trip hop will find something to really get their teeth into. For everyone else, it’s certain to provide seven minutes of pretty enjoyable music.
