SINGLE REVIEW: Noise Beneath The Floor – waning

‘…a clear step in a brilliantly fun new direction for Noise Beneath the Floor, and continues to cement the band’s status as a real hidden gem of the indie rock and emo scenes…’

2025 represented something of a quiet year for Georgia-Ohio four-piece Noise Beneath the Floor. With no new releases and few live performances, most of the year consisted of working on solo projects, writing new material, and organising the physical release of their 2024 sophomore record, ‘WHAT IF I’M ALWAYS GONNA BE THIS WAY?‘; it was productive, certainly, but not outwardly so. Yet 2026 already seems to be shaping up to be rather different for the indie rock outfit, kicking things off with an insight into what they have spent the past twelve months working on.

Whilst still retaining the dreamy, introspective undertones that made their previous work so compelling, ‘waning‘ sees the band utilise a far more punkish array of sounds, with distorted vocals, brash guitar melodies, and thumping percussion. The result is the perfect evolution of what Noise Beneath the Floor have to offer, as they vault through ridiculously fun choruses that are packed with bold and infectious hooks, and deliver delightfully jarring key changes as the track builds towards a roiling boil of a climax.

Gavin McIntire sounds as whimsical yet compelling as ever, their vocals layered with crackling distortion to give it a loud and uncompromising feel. Furthermore, they work wonderfully with the feathery and melodic vocals of Jade Marié, who features far more heavily in the vocal department than on previous Noise Beneath the Floor outings. The chemistry between herself and McIntire is wholly natural, and delightfully fun, even given the introspective nature of the lyricism.

waning‘ is a clear step in a brilliantly fun new direction for Noise Beneath the Floor, and continues to cement the band’s status as a real hidden gem of the indie rock and emo scenes; their capacity for carefully balancing being genuinely heartfelt with having a damn good time makes for an instantly appealing sound that does not demand your attention, but wholeheartedly deserves it. If this is just the start of the band’s 2026, then it promises to a fantastic year for listeners indeed.
