‘…an invigorating offering that goes toe-to-toe with titans of the modern metalcore scene. Slick yet punchy, with just the slightest of theatrical touches…’
It is time for the final single review of the year, and thanks to Merseyside’s Syntara, we get to send off 2025’s single reviews with a bang. The metalcore outfit have been bringing their sci-fi narrative concept to life since late last year, and have slowly been gathering a reputation as ferocious yet polished newcomers worthy of your attention. Not only did the band close out this year with a headline show at Chester’s Live Rooms, they also have provided a double-single of two immense metalcore bangers.
The band immediately get down to business on ‘Path Of Lies’, with chunky riffs and driving rhythms providing a distinctly emo-tinged backdrop for the delightfully compelling vocals of Matt Ellis. Synths twinkle softly above electrifying heaviness, providing some tasteful contrast, whilst the acoustic bridge is executed wonderfully, resonating with a softly melancholic energy without feeling overly melodramatic.
‘Digital Bind’ offers a far more grandiose take on Synatra’s sound. Trap beats effortlessly flow into an ambient guitar soundscape, anchored by a melodic bass line snaking around a percussive beat that marches forwards ceaselessly. The choruses are undeniably immense, with Ellis showcasing a wonderful upper register, before plunging into an unnerving bridge segment that captures the sci-fi vibes of the project perfectly. Synths loop with a haunting aura, whilst Ellis shifts effortlessly into a screamed vocal passage, before falling away and unveiling a wonderfully dramatic guitar solo. It’s a fantastically cinematic showcase of talent from these rising stars.
Syntara aren’t reinventing the wheel here, but what they are doing is using their skill set to the best of their abilities, and the result is an invigorating offering that goes toe-to-toe with titans of the modern metalcore scene. Slick yet punchy, with just the slightest of theatrical touches, ‘The Mind’s Descent’ is the sound of a band that could have an awful lot to give to the scene.
