SINGLE REVIEW: Blue Jean – Final Hour

‘…Blue Jean has waited until December to deliver a must-listen experience that undoubtedly deserves further commendation…’

Emerging back in 2023 with her debut EP, singer-songwriter Blue Jean has been haunting Liverpool for the past two years, honing her craft. Having played legendary local venues and even stopping by the capital, supporting artists such as Cosmic Crooner and Picture Parlour, this past month has seen the enigmatic artist stepping out into the spotlight once more with a brand new single that deserves to launch her to headline status.

A display of genuinely beautiful musicianship, ‘Final Hour’ is simply begging to be played over the slow credits scroll of your favourite heartbreaking indie flick. The instrumentals are both sumptuous and sparse, waves of soft electronics ebb and flow beneath twinkling, echoing guitars. Jazz toned melodies pour forwards and envelop the listener in melancholy distilled to its purest essence. There are no soaring guitar solos, bombastic orchestras, or wild rhythmic switch-ups; Blue Jean has simply gathered simple musical ingredients, and presented them in a manner that truly brings out their beauty.

It all serves as a wondrous backdrop to a marvellous vocal performance, as Blue Jean delivers soulful, bittersweet melodies that penetrate to the very soul. Holding on desperately to a love that has long since fallen apart, now letting out one final breath, is conveyed perfectly; there is adoration and sorrow in equal measure, both presented with a captivating sense of vulnerability.

Perhaps the only complaint about this track that can be made is that the Song of the Year listings here now must redrafted again; Blue Jean has waited until December to deliver a must-listen experience that undoubtedly deserves further commendation. But if reworking those articles is the price that must be paid for such good music, then let it be known I will happily pay it.
