‘…it is no easy task to stand among a crowd that is ever expanding. Yet between her heartfelt delivery and expansive instrumentals, Kiss might well just manage that…’
Based out of West Yorkshire, Eva Kiss is an artist with ambition. Not content with being simply another voice in the latest grunge revival, Kiss seeks to bring a narrative-driven songwriting approach and a queer perspective to the scene, and actually create an impact far beyond streaming numbers.
This can truly be heard in her latest single, ‘Oh, My God’, which deals with estrangement from religion when one’s sexuality does not align with the desires of the church. Bristling with soulful melodrama, the track starts small, with little more than Kiss’s smoky vocals simmering above suggestions of instruments; guitars strum with a listless nature as Kiss haunts the track with a captivating darkness.
The back half of the track explodes into a righteous fury, as Kiss belts strident passages over crashing drums and driving guitars, almost as if proclaiming a prayer to some distant heaven. It’s superbly executed climax that builds incrementally with cinematic musicianship and raw vocal bellows, before giving way in the track’s dying moments and fading back out to nothingness. It is catharsis at its most potent.
The world of grunge is packed with artists striving to to be heard right now; it is no easy task to stand among a crowd that is ever expanding. Yet between her heartfelt delivery and expansive instrumentals, Kiss might well just manage that; she is an artist utilising these musical styles to convey a narrative, rather than simply cashing in on what is popular, and that sense of heart may take her very far.
