‘…one of the must-know grassroots bands. They’re funky, they’re punky, and may well just set your headphones alight…’
The Marigolds have been part of the Merseyside music scene since their debut back in 2020, and in the past five years, they have established themselves as a formidable live act with a penchant for merging funk and punk. Their releases have been slow and steady, but have certainly picked up momentum since last year, with ‘Into My Head‘, ‘Kitchen Party Anthem‘ and ‘Panic Attack Pussycat‘ all making their way from stages to streaming services.
There is no messing around when it comes to their latest release, ‘Robot Queen‘. Immediately, the band smack the listener with an absolutely filthy guitar riff that smokes with a bluesy intensity. Verses shimmer with a glossy sense of suspense, guitars softly strumming over groovy percussion, before erupting into choruses that demand you to move. The drums crash down and catapult you into the air with a devastating funk swagger.
Vocalist Joe Green sounds better than ever, delivering the track with a devilishly theatrical degree of violence. Alternating between reverb soaked muttering and absolutely incendiary screams, Green makes for a wildly captivating presence as they deliver lyricism laced with an absurdist wit. The chemistry between these three musicians is apparent and palpable, pushing each element of this track to new electrifying heights.
There is a degree of polish present on ‘Robot Queen‘ that truly makes this track feel like a real moment of evolution for The Marigolds. An adored outfit within the Merseyside scene, it is a release such as this that offers them the chance to break out into other music circuits of the UK, and demostrate just why this three-piece are rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the must-know grassroots bands. They’re funky, they’re punky, and may well just set your headphones alight.
