SINGLE REVIEW: Maverick Mom – Adabana

‘…start to finish, Maverick Mom put on a phenomenal display of creative and charismatic musicianship…’

Forming back in 2022, Maverick Mom are a four-piece based out of Japan that seek to embody themes of nonconformity and creativity in their music. The band have become a popular member of Japan’s grassroots rock scene, opening festivals such as Rock In Japan FES 2023 and LIVE the SPEEDSTAR. Yet if the band’s latest single, ‘Adabana’, is anything to go by, it won’t just be Japan that wants a piece of the Maverick Mom action.

From start to finish, Maverick Mom put on a phenomenal display of creative and charismatic musicianship. A jazzy and intensely catchy math-rock styled number, guitars dance complex pirouettes atop of bass lines that pop with captivating funk energy, as undulating melodies explode into snappy passages of slapped bass. Fiercely danceable rhythms are conjured into being by a classy yet complex percussion performance, swapping and changing presentation effortlessly, yet never losing a commanding ability to get you moving.

It’s a tremendous display of talent, and works wonders with the jazzy yet often feathery vocal melodies. All of the instrumental wizardry is tied together wonderfully by blissfully catchy choruses and deftly performed verses, adding some much appreciated structure to the brilliant chaos that the rest of the track presents with.

Maverick Mom’s J-rock infused approach to math rock makes their sound immediately stand out, and it’s hard not to believe that this is an outfit poised to become cult favourites. ‘Adabana’ is a masterclass of making rock music sound fun again, and will immediately have you diving into this band’s back catalogue.
