SINGLE REVIEW: Olivia Miceli – Darling, he doesn’t care

…nostalgic soundscapes presented with a modern flair; it’s catchy, it’s playful, and it’s instantly unforgettable…

Seeking to conquer the musical world from the comfort of her bedroom, Olivia Miceli is already well on her way to achieving these goals. The singer-songwriter has seen radio play from America to Australia, whilst also being picked up by home nation airwaves such as BBC Radio 6. With a focus on romance, heartbreak, and nostalgia, Miceli has already released two albums since her 2021 debut single, and her capacity for being a prolific songwriter shows no signs of diminishing with her most recent effort.

A breezy, spirited collision of throwback pop and lo-fi pop, ‘Darling, he doesn’t care‘ feels all at once timeless and incredibly fresh. The luscious, playful backing harmonies, groovy bass line and bouncing rhythms give the whole affair a distinctly disco feel, whilst the minimalist approach to the instrumentation and feathery lead melodies are more akin to something you could find on a Billie Eilish record.

Miceli herself is an understated yet captivating presence throughout the track. One could imagine her as a close friend, done with you following around a man who gives nothing in return, or perhaps her own conscience, watching as she falls head over heels for someone absolutely not worth her time. The melodies are simple yet wickedly catchy, and in place of vocal acrobatics is a performance that exudes a wonderful amount of wit and charm; even those of you in happy, long lasting relationships will want to break up with your man after listening to this track.

Miceli feels like an indie pop darling in the making, with a perfect balance of familiarity and creativity in her sound. ‘Darling, he doesn’t care’ is a superb representation of this, with nostalgic soundscapes presented with a modern flair; it’s catchy, it’s playful, and it’s instantly unforgettable.
