SINGLE REVIEW: TNL VZN – Satin

‘…masters of conjuring ethereal yet intimate soundscapes, balancing perfectly aggression with melancholy. ‘Satin’ continues to demonstrate this perfectly…’

Increasingly a staple of the alternative underground, Birmingham’s TNL VZN have been attracting attention since their debut back in 2023. Weaving together sonic ideas from grunge, post-hardcore, and alternative rock, the band not only tap into the relevant ideas of current listening trends, but ensure that they do so in creative and captivating ways; they are here to reinvent, not repeat. Ahead of performances at No Play Festival and Skygaze Festival, the five-piece have released a brand new single that reminds you just why they are in demand.

What TNL VZN have consistently proven themselves to be masters of conjuring ethereal yet intimate soundscapes, balancing perfectly aggression with melancholy. ‘Satin‘ continues to demonstrate this perfectly, and perhaps better than ever before. Colossal, distorted guitar riffs bear down upon the listener during the immense choruses, whilst the verses pull back the heaviness to let slick bass lines and shimmering strumming open up the soundscape; it is a masterclass of ebb and flow, giving the listener room to breathe before smothering them with crushing, grungy weight.

Vocalist Eva May Beard sounds stronger than ever before. Whilst her vocal presence has always been a rich and evocative element of TNL VZN‘s sound, ‘Satin‘ elevates this tenfold, with a real depth and power now present in her performance. Conveying both a desperation and a disgust, she perfectly captures a feeling of falling for someone obviously terrible for you; there is intimacy and temptation, but also the subtlest undercurrent of anger.

All of these elements are brought together in a riotous close that switches the rhythms up for something that demands movement; a reminder of just why TNL VZN have earned their place upon so many heavy line ups. Undoubtedly, this band could easily prove to be an incredibly important member of the latest emerging wave of UK alternative bands.
