SINGLE REVIEW: NEONshe – Pity Party

‘…circumstances may change, but NEONshe’s impressive performance truly embodies the fact that you remain at the end of it all; the future is not to be dictated by the way the world mistreats you…’

As cruel as it may be that all good things must come to an end, one must at least have some solace in the fact that endings facilitate good art. For NEONshe, it is her time in Japan that has reached a conclusion, having now lived there twice, but now finding themselves in a position that means that they must return to England. For many, this might be a blow to their dreams that they cannot bounce back from. For NEONshe, this is just another step towards the pop princess finding her true self, and in the process, she has gifted us a brand new single, ‘Pity Party‘.

This is a luscious pop banger that pulls very much from 00’s pop ideas. Verses are decorated with quirky bleeps and beeps, before vaulting into bright, powerful choruses. All of it is gorgeously mixed, with every element sparkling with energy and bombast; it truly feels like you have stepped into a party of NEONshe’s creation.

NEONshe’s vocals are vibrant and defiant, as she alternates between playfully minimalist verses, and bold, soaring choruses that crackle with a surprisingly soulful energy. The spoken word passages in the pre-chorus are a particularly great addition, carrying a real sense of bite, and complimenting the more vulnerable and confessional choruses. Gospel tinged backing harmonies round out the free-spirited key-change in the back half of the track, lending a surprising sense of grandiosity to the number.

Love may end and circumstances may change, but NEONshe’s impressive performance truly embodies the fact that you remain at the end of it all; the future is not to be dictated by the way the world mistreats you, but how you choose to get back up from being knocked down. As to where NEONshe heads from here, that is yet to be seen, but if ‘Pity Party‘ is anything to go by, then there are no brakes on this train, although there might be a mirror-ball or two.
