SINGLE REVIEW: Auraboros – Therapy

‘…undoubtedly the finest work by Auraboros to date. Fuelled by a rightous and cathartic anger, the track surges through emo-tinged melodies and colossal breakdowns…’

It has been a little over a year since Auraboros released their ‘Absent’ EP, and played their accompanying ‘Absent Show’ headline set. Serving as incredible achievements both in the studio and in the live context, it was a painfully cathartic statement for the band. Now with a fresh line-up and away from the limelight, the band have returned to tie a knot in that pain with ‘Therapy’.

There’s coming back with a bang, and then there’s coming back with a small nuclear detonation; this is undoubtedly the finest work by Auraboros to date. Fuelled by a rightous and cathartic anger, the track surges through emo-tinged melodies and colossal breakdowns, even showing off some distinctly jazzy and progressive chord progressions during the first verse. Choruses soar with an unparalleled melancholic ferocity, buoyed by almost danceable rhythms, before plunging into thunderous chugging guitars.

Aisling Killey continues to remain a need-to-know vocalist in the heavy scene, with a range that only seems to improve with each consecutive release. Her sung vocals sound stronger than ever before, with a richness and emotive weight that perfectly embraces the track’s desperate tones. Furthermore, the screams and growls that she manages to hit land with incredible force, pushing the track into new dimensions of heaviness as it cascades about the listener. All of this is backed up by harmonies from her bandmates that round out the experience perfectly; the chemistry between her and guitarist Rayne Williams continues to shine through.

Every aspect of Auraboros’ work is carefully crafted to carry meaning and power, and that continues to be the case of ‘Therapy‘. This is a collection of musicians that seek not to simply be yet another heavy band that you can mosh to (although moshing is a guarantee with their discography), but a band with a strong artistic vision that showcases why queer voices do not only belong to the heavy scene, but are essential to its growth and evolution. A must-listen for metal fans.
