‘…The Sukis finest work to date. ‘Olivier’ is a brilliantly composed track from start to finish, with intelligent and complex creative choices intermingling perfectly with a wonderfully accessible foundation…’
The Sukis seem to be building up to something. The Liverpool-based indie trio returned after two years with their infectious adrenaline rush of a single, ‘To No One‘. Only two months later, the band have returned with yet another single, with ‘Olivier‘ serving as a look into masking, and the playful demand to be rewarded for putting on a performance that puts the neurotypical world at ease.
Whilst still certain to appeal to indie fans, to describe ‘Olivier’ as simply indie rock would be a major injustice to this number. Certainly, the simple musical ingredients at play here do retain the indie-sleaze feeling that the band have so effortlessly perfected, but how the band have utilised these elements is both creative and intelligent. Jazzy guitar licks, unexpected chord progressions, wildly impressive percussion, and unconventional structuring surprisingly gives the whole affair a deeply prog rock feeling.
Importantly, however, is the fact that The Sukis haven’t traded complexity for quality and accessibility; the roller-coaster verses sit alongside brilliantly infectious choruses, with the central ‘Olivier’ hook guaranteed to be stuck in your head after a single listen. Tige Burns remains an impressive frontman, with vocals that ooze charm and showmanship; all at once, Burns is playful yet sharp witted, both commenting on just how good of a neurotypical person he can pretend to be, and the isolating experience that existing as a neurodiverse person in this world can be.
Unquestionably, this is The Sukis finest work to date. ‘Olivier‘ is a brilliantly composed track from start to finish, with intelligent and complex creative choices intermingling perfectly with a wonderfully accessible foundation. Both this track and ‘To No One‘ are indicative of a band that have been preparing for their most exciting and important era to date; they may not be getting an Olivier any time soon, but their name feels certain to end up in lights.
