SINGLE REVIEW: NEONshe – It Girl

It seems undeniable at this point that this is NEONshe’s world, and we’re just living in it. Based out of Kyoto, the DIY pop artist has taken 2025 by the horns, not only working towards her third record, but using her spare time to advocate for limb loss awareness and animal rights. Now, having signed with Retro Reverb Records, the bubblegum pop princess is back with a brand new banger, ‘It Girl’.

This latest number from NEONshe is a glittering slab of retro pop fun, with an instrumental that sits squarely between Lady Gaga and The Human League. Layers of twinkling synth dance atop of strident bass tones, all set to a beat that makes every step you take feel as though it belongs on a catwalk. A slick, stripped back bridge vaults wonderfully into a sparkling key change climax, bringing back those bubblegum pop vibes that NEONshe perfected early on in her career.

Vocally, NEONshe approaches the track in a far more laidback manner than in her recent material, trading impressive belted passages for a brilliantly cool performance that even features a sharp and sassy spoken word bridge. The chorus hook is wickedly catchy, cementing itself into your brain immediately upon the first listen; you might be a beer-drinking, beard-having, bike-riding, bench-pressing mountain of a man, but NEONshe is guaranteed to make you feel not only like an ‘it girl’, but a ‘not-gonna-take-your-shit-girl’.

It seems that no matter what NEONshe turns her hand to, she is able to spin gold. ‘It Girl’ certainly retains her colourful, bubblegum spirit, but gives it a brand new retro-styled sonic landscape to explore. The result is brilliantly catchy, playfully fierce, and simply a damn good listen from start to finish; no matter who you are, it’s time to let out your inner it girl.
