‘…a track that signifies a band who isn’t content with letting their scene or themselves stagnate; it’s heavy, angry, and loud, but also an awful lot of fun…’
The devil works hard, but False Thoughts may well work harder. Since emerging early last year, the band have not only put out a thunderous debut EP, but have also performed on a wide variety of heavy line-ups across the north west. In doing so, they’ve earned a reputation of being both a killer live act, and a heavy band with an immense amount of studio promise. ‘rip’ sees the band preparing to enter a brand new era, and deliver upon that promise tenfold.
Before listening to this track, it may be well worth your time discovering a good injury claims lawyer, because the whiplash you’ll get from all of the head banging is absolutely criminal. This is a blistering showcase of groove, as False Thoughts lay down jagged, chugging riffs atop of a swaggering percussive beat; it makes for a disgustingly brilliant fusion of heaviness with catchiness that demands you to move. Drummer Stanley Causier is an incredible performer, knowing exactly how to evolve a groove without overcomplicating it. The perfect example of this is at 1:10, as Causier keeps to a simple stomping rhythm, but embellishes it with a subtle yet sharp cymbal rattle, giving the passage an undeniable bite.
The dual vocals of Mike Fenwick and Izabel Lavin (frontperson of fellow local heavy legends rozemary) makes for a ferocious listening experience. Fenwick sounds more visceral than ever before, with a sharpness to his vocals that cuts through the dense layers of instrumental heaviness perfectly, whilst Lavin once again showcases screams that defy all sense of humanity. The two collide with a righteous anger, perfectly matching one another’s aggression as the themes of paternal estrangement unravel.
‘rip’ feels special. It is a track that signifies a band who isn’t content with letting their scene or themselves stagnate; it’s heavy, angry, and loud, but also an awful lot of fun. If this is just a preview as to where False Thoughts are headed next, then the future is bright for not just this band, but Merseyside’s next wave of heavy artists.
