SINGLE REVIEW: Private roads – Crossroads

‘…raw rock fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but is undeniably written by serious musicians…’

Based out of Merseyside, Private roads released their debut effort ‘Get a Clue’ back in February of this year. The label of ‘millennial Dad rock’ is something the band have proudly ran with, and their appearances on plenty of live shows since that release indicates that Merseyside yearns for the Dad rock. That feels set to continue following the release of their electrifying second single, ‘Crossroads’.

Have you ever wanted to feel as though you’re sat at the helm of a big rig, cruising down a wide, open highway in the American outback? Between the thick, distorted guitars, driving rhythms, and effortlessly cool vocal performance, that is exactly how you will end up feeling. This is a bristling slab of rock that doesn’t overcomplicate matters, but manages to cleverly together sounds from blues rock, stoner rock and even a little country rock to create something that manages to sound both fresh and raw, and like something your Dad would absolutely jam out to.

The guitar work is sprawling and exciting, ducking in and out of the deep grooves carved by a swaggering rhythmic backbone. Moments of technical flourish, such as the hammered notes that drive forwards in the track’s climactic final chorus, capture a real classic rock showmanship. All of this is tied together by vocals that are slick, rich, and moody, carrying a bite that perfectly compliments the rest of the track.

Crossroads’ is raw rock fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but is undeniably written by serious musicians. It demands to be blasted from the largest set of car speakers you can find, with a wide open highway and zero speed limits; you simply cannot shake the feeling that this track was produced by some underground 70’s band that conquered the American spirit. And that’s not bad for a four-piece from Merseyside.
