SINGLE REVIEW: Sea Breeze – Nighthawks

‘…you never feel as though they are style over substance. ‘Nighthawks’ is absolutely worth listening to, even if you had previously sworn off psych rock…’

Based out of Manchester, Sea Breeze are a self-described multi-genre outfit that aims to bring together the worlds of psych, funk, soul, and jazz under a banner of effortless coolness. Building towards their upcoming sophomore album, ‘UNTITLED’, the band have released a brand new track entitled ‘Nighthawks’.

There’s a certain restless mystique about this track that cannot help but capture your imagination. Even with its minimal lyricism, you are transported into a world that is simultaneously effortlessly cool and undeniably seedy, where cigarette smoke hangs thick in the air and the last moments of sunlight peak through the slit between closed curtains.

Slick bass lines swagger beneath atmospheric, glossy guitar work, with the impressive technical proficiency never overshadowing the track’s soulful feel. These sprawling highlights are kept just restrained enough by a tastefully executed percussive backbone, evoking an undeniable groove whilst keeping all of the other musical elements from becoming too unwieldy. This is truly a performance with feeling.

Sea Breeze pack their sound with plenty of technical flair, guaranteeing favour with psych and jazz rock mega fans. However, they also sculpt their tracks with cleverly crafted hooks, grit, and fun, making it them a perfect gateway band into these musical realms; you never feel as though they are style over substance. ‘Nighthawks’ is absolutely worth listening to, even if you had previously sworn off psych rock.
