SINGLE REVIEW: Bella Wright – Love’s Just A Word

‘…you can truly hear an artist who has clearly spent time and effort honing their craft…’

It has been two years since Bella Wright’s last single, ‘Playing the Game’, but do not mistake that for an artist who hasn’t been immensely busy. The Montana born singer songwriter has spent much of the last year collaborating with fellow American-born Liverpool-based artist Carleigh Mack, constructing their ‘Gardening Club’ musical project. With this latest single, it is clear that this year of creative exploration has been of great benefit to Wright; ‘Love’s Just A Word’ is easily her most complete single to date.

Wright continues to work with a sound that is influenced by indie rock, pop punk, and grunge on this punchy and cathartic number; the choruses are brilliantly catchy, especially with the gang vocal hook. However, there is also a surprising britpop flair to the number, with the acoustic strumming and melancholic atmosphere during the verses almost feeling a little like something you would expect from an early Coldplay record. It’s a subtly superb expansion of Wright’s sound that keeps it feeling familiar yet fresh.

Wright’s vocal performance is inarguably better than ever; between her moody lower register and playfully belted melodies, her character has truly started to shine through, making her all the more captivating to listen to. Furthermore, her penmanship on this number perfectly balances both wit and anger, as Wright acknowledges both her own worth, and that love is actions ratter than simply words.

Bella Wright has always been a compelling artist, but the development between her last single and ‘Love’s Just A Word’ is deeply impressive; you can truly hear an artist who has clearly spent time and effort honing their craft. This is Wright at their most mature, most inventive, and most exciting yet.
