‘…tender yet powerful expression of longing is certain to resonate deeply with listeners, and offers the most perfected expression of My’s sound to date…’
For many artists, the only body of water they consider conquering both sides of is the Atlantic. For self-proclaimed tiny rockstar Mina My, however, it has been the North Sea she has been commanding. Following on from her previous single, ‘Washing Machine‘, My has not only played to fans in her adoptive home of Liverpool, but also has made a festival appearance in her hometown of Stavanger, Norway. Now with over 2000 monthly listeners on streaming services, it is clear that My is certainly finding her feet and her fans, and that may well continue with her brand new single ‘I won’t say it (I love you)‘.
Perhaps the most ambitious number from My yet, this is dreamy ballad is packed with more sapphic yearning than even Hozier would be able to muster. My is a figure longing to confess her true feelings, yet terrified of ruining the nameless intimacy that already exists; a love that already exists in all but name. Despite her soft, folkish tones, there is a real depth of emotion in her delivery, and wonderful sense of warmth and charm that makes the track feel immediately relatable.
Instrumentally, the track sees some of My’s most ambitious creative choices to date. What begins as a simple indie pop number, decorated with gentle guitar strumming and meandering bass melodies, transitions into a sweeping and somewhat cinematic climax. A crackling guitar solo soars atop of crashing percussion and distant vocal screams, before My joins back in with with her wonderfully bittersweet melodies.
My has organically managed to grow a captivating sense of character through her releases, and that is no different with ‘I won’t say it (I love you)’. Her experience of the modern feminine is told with equal measures of playful whimsy, heartfelt charm, and spirited empowerment. This tender yet powerful expression of longing is certain to resonate deeply with listeners, and offers the most perfected expression of My’s sound to date.
