‘…If O’Riordan could bottle up her capacity to induce shivers and sell it, she would be a millionaire by tomorrow…’
Eve O’Riordan has already left quite the mark on 2025. March saw the release of her truly stunning folk-pop number ‘crying wolf’, which dealt with the darkest aspects of mental illness in an unquestionably beautiful way. There is little doubt that this is a track you will be reading about once more when we collate the finest of the year. However, the Liverpool based artist hasn’t been resting on her laurels, and has returned once again with a brand new single, ‘inhaler’.
The track is built around a looping, climbing piano melody that softly echoes beneath O’Riordan’s vocals. As the track progresses, this foundational melody becomes accompanied by other elements, such as a rousing bass melody, gentle percussion, and crisp acoustic guitar. The accompaniment of tender strings in the track’s back half is a particularly shiver inducing moment, building alongside O’Riordan’s vocals to produce something that feels beautifully cinematic.
Furthermore, O’Riordan’s vocals are truly stunning throughout. Building from little more than tender whispers to bursts of showstopping melodies that wouldn’t go amiss on a theatrical stage, there is a distinct, songbird quality to her voice that you cannot help but feel utterly and completely enraptured by. Her ruminations on living through crisis are delivered with heart, hope, and gentle, wry humour.
If O’Riordan could bottle up her capacity to induce shivers and sell it, she would be a millionaire by tomorrow. ‘inhaler’ is further proof that this musician is one of the finest emerging talents in Merseyside; the compositions are thoughtful and mesmerising, whilst her vocals are pure sunlight in sonic form. This is yet another essential listen from her, and it is easy to assume it will be one of many more to come.
