‘…darkly witty throughout, as she recounts the weighty existential dread that permeates every moment of modern existence, and offers inserting one’s head into a washing machine as a solution…’
Stavenger-via-Liverpool singer songwriter Mina My has been busy carving a name for herself both sides of the North Sea. Between a back catalogue of endearing and free-spirited tunes, and a steady but continuous run of live sets, it is no surprise that My’s streaming numbers are beginning to look mighty impressive for an artist of her size. No doubt that trend will continue with her acerbic new number, ‘Washing Machine’.
The track commences in a minimalistic manner; a steady, thumping rhythm sits beneath simplistic, looping acoustic guitar strumming. Slowly, however, it shifts and changed, with percussive rhythms weaving in delicate flourishes and electric guitars playing off of the lead vocal melody. By the end, it has almost morphed into a dance-rock cut, with a raucous, bouncing feel to it all.
My’s lyricism is darkly witty throughout, as she recounts the weighty existential dread that permeates every moment of modern existence, and offers inserting one’s head into a washing machine as a solution to the problem, giving the brain the clean out it needs. Furthermore, she captures the dizzying, constant nature of it all; she is constantly spinning, caught in a mess of personal obligations and societal obligations and trying to balance getting out of bed with saving the planet.
Whilst all of My’s material has sounded polished and professional, there is something about ‘Washing Machine‘ that simply makes her sound better than ever. Every little element, from the vocal delivery to the instrumental performances, sound tightened up and perfected in a manner that truly elevates the track, without losing the whimsical and grounded vibe that makes My so endearing. She may well have overtaken lefsegodt as the finest thing to have come out of Norway.
