SINGLE REVIEW: The Lonely Vega – How Many Ways

‘…Looping percussion rattles away over the top of a brooding, rich bass line, whilst shimmering synths intermittently illuminate the darkness…’

Based out of the northwest, The Lonely Vega is an artist in a position of rebirth. The singer-songwriter had already released music, but has been seeking to wipe the slate clean and start afresh with renewed creative vigour. The result of this is their brand new ‘debut’ single, ‘How Many Ways’.

How Many Ways’ is a moody, ethereal, lo-fi banger of a track. Looping percussion rattles away over the top of a brooding, rich bass line, whilst shimmering synths intermittently illuminate the darkness. Minimalist verses are contrasted by delightfully dense and soul-stirring choruses that rise up and crash about the listener. A soft guitar solo in the back half is a particularly wonderful addition, leading the track out to a twinkling climax.

In the midst of all of this, the vocals snake between the layers of synths almost as if they were another layer of the instrumentals. The main melody exists as little more than an enticing whisper, weighty with melancholy and longing despite their feathery lightness. However, it is when the track vaults into its driving choruses that the vocals truly become a delight to behold, as soaring notes are belted out and coated in a soft echo, working beautifully to transform the densely packed layers of music into something far more expansive.

How Many Ways‘ functions perfectly as a debut single, demonstrating precisely who The Lonely Vega is, at what their musical modus operandi consists of. It makes for an enchanting listening experience that feels wonderfully creative whilst retaining an accessible pop tone; different enough to stand-out, familiar enough to engage. For those who like their music lo-fi, then The Lonely Vega makes for a must-listen artist.
