‘…unapologetically youthful and femme-coded post-punk, refusing adhere to the demands of the genre’s boy’s club mentality…’
Perfection takes patience, and that has never been more so the case than with Girl Group. The five piece are an assembly of characters from an array of locations, all having met at LIPA. With a mantra of destroying the boy’s club culture of music, the band have dropped one single a year since 2023, with each being an absolute delight. Finally, the band have gifted us a third single, ‘Yay! Saturday’.
This track continues to see the band explore girlhood through a brilliantly whimsical and acerbic lens, as they document the simple privilege that is getting completely hammered on a Saturday night. A simple, driving instrumental consisting of cool, understated percussion and softly thumping bass captures the spirit of being dragged from bar to bar whilst deciding whether you should maintain your composure, or give up all pretences of being a sensible human.
The lyricism is devilishly witty, with a hedonistic and softly nihilistic tone to it all. Bars such as ‘What’s rational and logical can politely stay at home’ and ‘any kind of lesson learned won’t fit in my tiny purse’ chime in alongside the ear-worm main melody of the chorus, perhaps reminding you just how messy a good Saturday should be.
Girl Group exist to remind you that nobody gets out alive anyway, so perhaps life shouldn’t be taken so seriously. ‘Yay! Saturday’ continues their trend of producing unapologetically youthful and femme-coded post-punk, refusing adhere to the demands of the genre’s boy’s club mentality.
This track is certain to annoy all of the right people.
