‘…an ample reminder that you can never predict what form this queen of the flamboyant may take next…’
Many artists may well understanably use the release of an album as a reason to give themselves something of a break, but the same cannot be said for Kyoto-based NEONshe. Last year saw the release of the pop princess’s sophomore record, ‘Butterfly‘, which saw her at her most vulnerable, powerful, and electrifying yet. Yet there is no sign of this DIY diva slowing down, with this month seeing the release of a brand new collaborative effort with Hungry Hound, ‘Gone‘.
It is impressive how NEONshe consistently manages to evolve upon her own sound in ways that feel natural and do not compromise her vision; this is the first time we have heard the artist toying with house-styled soundscapes, and yet it is executed in a manner that is truly captivating. Dreamy vocals are performed with an intimate yet ethereal warmth, as she explores her youth on the Isle of Wight, and how leaving your past can perhaps bring you closer to it.
The instrumental, produced by fellow Isle of Wight once-resident Hungry Hound, is a rich and luscious affair that immediately gets under your skin and holds you close. Ebbing and flowing between pulsating dance beats and moments of sparkling, shimmering clarity, Hungry Hound has a clear understanding of NEONshe’s vocals as an instrument, and brings them to life in interesting ways. How she flows from one ear to the other between breaks in her speech truly gives the impression that you are residing within her world.
Ahead of what may well promise to be another very busy and very colourful year for NEONshe, ‘Gone‘ acts as an ample reminder that you can never predict what form this queen of the flamboyant may take next. Furthermore, her capacity for selecting the perfect collaborators remains firmly intact, with this track in particular sounding like her most polished and refined effort to date. It is well worth keeping an eye on this artist during 2025.
