‘…capturing what makes the material of giants such as Spiritbox and Sleep Token so compelling, and swapping out the squeaky-clean polish for pure, ferocious energy…’
It has been a short while since we last heard from Liverpool heavy act Cut Short. Last September they dropped perhaps their most successful offering to date in the form of ‘Speech Patterns‘. It is clear there is a growing appetite for the dark and violent take on metalcore that the band present with, and ahead of a headline show in Birkenhead, the band have returned to satiate the masses once more with their killer new single, ‘Dirt Feed‘.
Perhaps the only thing better than baddiecore is scouse baddiecore, and Cut Short demonstrate this on this apocalyptic yet undeniably groovy number. The track commences with a swaggering, chunky riff, layered atop of bouncing rhythms that command you to move. Expansive yet pensive melodic passages combust into thunderous moments of heaviness, whilst break-beat loops punctuate the track with nu-metal energy.
All of this perfectly placed chaos builds towards a superb climax segment, with magnificently layered vocals almost giving the entire track a truly unholy feeling; an apocalypse at the hands of hate preachers and wealth hoarders, conveyed through visceral screamed lyrics such as ‘Vultures picking apart the world that we once knew/To make the future theirs/To steal the ground beneath you‘. This spiral upwards comes crashing back down with one final crushing breakdown.
Cut Short have been worthy of attention for quite some time now, offering an electrifying and raw take on modern metalcore. However, it is ‘Dirt Feed‘ that truly marks them out as ones to watch. This feels like their most polished, focused, and meaningful effort to date, with superb performances from all involved, capturing what makes the material of giants such as Spiritbox and Sleep Token so compelling, and swapping out the squeaky-clean polish for pure, ferocious energy.
