‘…Sophie Li is an artist with a superb understanding of how to create something that sounds both deeply familiar, yet distinctly fresh…’
Merseyside-based singer songwriter Sophie Li has finally returned with a brand new single. Last year saw the release of her gorgeous and gently melancholic single ‘Billboards’, and last month, accompanied by a headline release show, Li offered the long-awaited follow-up, ‘Magnets’.
Li’s latest single is a driving retro-rock number that retains the heartfelt whimsy of her previous material, whilst showing she has the capacity to lend some real punch to her music. Playful riffs gallop forwards over upbeat, danceable rhythms, whilst shimmering guitar melodies, subtle synth additions, and pounding percussion truly gives the track a late 80’s/early 90’s feel.
Li’s knack for crafting devilishly catchy melodies is on full display, with a chorus that promises to have you singing along by the end of the track. The backing harmonies are a further lovely touch that serves to make the track sound even more expansive, and ensure that those choruses remain with the listener. The guilty pleasure and excitement of temptation is captured perfectly in her spirited, heartfelt delivery.
Balancing sounds from indie pop, pop rock, and even midwest emo, Sophie Li is an artist with a superb understanding of how to create something that sounds both deeply familiar, yet distinctly fresh. ‘Magnets’ may well have a real retro flair, but it sits perfectly among the current releases coming out of Merseyside.
