‘…It is, without a doubt, a song that will be revisited once more upon discussing the best art of 2025. This is a must-listen for folk fans…’
It’s been a little while since Merseyside singer-songwriter Eve O’Riordan released her debut single. Back in mid-September, the artist released ‘mascara’, which packed a playful blend of country, pop, and indie, and a rallying cry for living life to the full, consequences be damned. Now she has returned, and offers a single that marks her out as an incredibly special songwriter.
Leaning more heavily in a folk direction than her previous single, ‘crying wolf’ trades out playful peppy genre-mashing for pure emotive power and musical performances that take your breath away. Shimmering acoustic guitars entwine with the tender vocals of O’Riordan, as she exposes the darkest and most vulnerable sides of herself, and the doubt that one feels that their mental struggles are even worth struggling about.
Gradually the track builds, swirling about the listener with softly prancing percussion and gentle electric riffing. O’Riordan’s vocals evolve into something truly shiver-inducing, as she soars through compelling choruses and even displays surprisingly ferocious grit during the track’s heart-rending climax.
As we enter the soft warmth of spring, with all of its blossom and colour, O’Riordan has crafted the song that perhaps accompanied that fragile beauty the best. It is, without a doubt, a song that will be revisited once more upon discussing the best art of 2025. This is a must-listen for folk fans, and frankly, anybody who enjoys music with meaning.
