‘…a project she has evidently put immense amount of time and effort into, and the result is certain to find a place on your playlists…’
Newcastle-upon-Tyne based singer-songwriter India Arkin has had quite the journey in the first five years of her solo career. From signing with HMV’s 1921 Records, to appearances on BBC Introducing, to support slots with indie legends The Feeling, it seems clear that the star quality she possesses is evident to all who stumble across her. Now an independent musician beholden to no one, that star quality only seems to be blossoming further, with her brilliant new single ‘Metro Line’ demanding your attention.
At 4:55 minutes long, ‘Metro Line’ is a surprisingly sprawling and densely constructed track, packed with musical moments that demand repeated listens. A buoyant waltzing rhythm dominates the first half of the track, with dancing guitar melodies pirouetting about Arkin’s playful yet soulful vocal performance. The bluesy undertones of the track perfectly play into the lyrical themes of longing and restlessness, as Arkin cuts a steadfast figure amongst the colourful torrent of sound.
Choruses are punctuated with infectious vocal melodies, backed up by gang vocals that demand you sing along. The back half of the track sees Arkin fully lean into the alt-rock energies of the track, with a rhythmic switch-up accompanied by an accelerating tempo, perhaps imploring you to get on that train you’ve been debating before it leaves the station. It’s a brilliantly danceable climax that feels indicative of an artist wholly set on doing things her own way.
Everything about Arkin’s work radiates the sort of polish that one might expect from an artist ten times her size. ‘Metro Line’ is the perfect embodiment of her creativity, flair, and focus on crafting art worth caring about; this isn’t merely just another song for Arkin, but a project she has evidently put immense amount of time and effort into, and the result is certain to find a place on your playlists. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing her name in lights.
