‘…it wouldn’t be all that surprising if they become an exciting part of the next wave of alternative grassroots artists…’
Describing themselves as an electronic/alternative rock act with a penchant for the darker side of music, Tenkila made their entrance into the Merseyside circuit last year, with multiple performances at LIPA’s 2ube venue. This year sees the band moving their skills from the stage to the studio, with the release of ‘Spilt Ink’.
With their debut single, Tenkila offer a brooding, atmospheric slab of alternative rock, simmering with shoegaze and grunge flair. Fuzzy, distorted guitars sprawl outwards, with dual melodies frequently entwining with one another is a subtly dramatic manner. A serene bridge is crafted out of layered vocals, before the track collapses back in on itself with a driving guitar solo.
Vocalist Tanya Tenkila is a stunning presence throughout, knowing when to use her distinctive tones to merge with the instrumental murk, and when to contrast it with soaring melodies that evoke ‘This Is Why’ era Hayley Williams. There’s a surprisingly bluesy flair that Tenkila possesses that works perfectly with the alternative coolness of the band’s instrumental work.
Above all else, ‘Spilt Ink’ is a track that radiates potential. It is clear that Tenkila have an appreciation for what is relevant in the alternative scene currently, but remain cautious and creative enough to ensure they don’t blend in. For this brand new band, the musical world feels open for them to explore, and it wouldn’t be all that surprising if they become an exciting part of the next wave of alternative grassroots artists.
