‘…demonstrating that they are serious contenders in the latest wave of UK emo, offering a performance that may well snag the attention of many, perhaps even outside of the emo space…’
For those who know where to look, there is an emo boom in the UK currently, fronted by a wave of new artists taking the midwest American style, and delivering it with UK flair. Danger Dog, Pale Sailor, Student Slasher Film and Knives Chau Fan Club are all offering brilliant takes on emo adjacent sounds. Another such act is West Midlands based Vienna, whom even at this early stage in their career have worked alongside legendary producer Jake Checkoway. If you didn’t know this four-piece before, that might be about to change.
Much of what Vienna have released thus far has been bright, charming, jangly emo fun. ‘Somewhere Between Here and Gone’, however, sees the band move into a far more melancholic and weighty space, with gritty, distorted guitars draped across a moody bass line that meanders through suggestions of melody. The brooding emotive weight of the track is only further magnified by the stabbing moments of silence that pierce through the noise during the choruses.
A swirling bridge vaults into a raw, ferocious climax, with vocals rising up from a smoky rumination to an intense shout, the very edges fraying with emotion. It makes for an incredibly compelling performance, showing a perfect appreciation for when to restrain, and when to let go, making the climax of the track all the more cathartic to behold.
Vienna have always offered a sound that will appeal to fans of emo, but it is with this track that they offer something truly special. ‘Somewhere Between Here and Gone’ is still Vienna having fun, but also demonstrating that they are serious contenders in the latest wave of UK emo, offering a performance that may well snag the attention of many, perhaps even outside of the emo space. This is the song that truly shows the talent Vienna possesses.
