SINGLE REVIEW: Labyrinthine Oceans – lost to the ocean

‘…if any band feel primed to become the next darlings of the underground music world, it is Labyrinthine Oceans…’

After last year saw not only a string of brilliant singles, but also consistent touring that saw them travel not only all over the UK but even to Brussels, Labyrinthine Oceans are here to demonstrate that they show no signs of slowing down any time soon. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne four-piece released their latest single, ‘lost to the ocean’, last week, diving further into their world of genre-defying, cinematic sound.

lost to the ocean‘ represents Labyrinthine Oceans at possibly their most dramatic yet. Keeping thematically appropriate, the track pulls on the listener with rhythmic tidal energies, alternating between moments of sparse, reverb-soaked quiet, and driving, distorted passages that crash around the listener, all of which is layered over a waltzing rhythm that is decorated with surprisingly complex fills. Vocalist Julia O’Neil is an enchanting figure amidst the fury, softly muffled by the tides of music, yet pulling you further and further into the depths with her alluring tones.

The guitar solo in the back half of the track is a truly beautiful musical performance, managing to perfectly balance showmanship and artistry in a truly enrapturing display of musicianship. Ellie Bunker makes the instrument dance, conjuring up cascading arpeggios and soaring melodies that are coated with a wonderfully distorted yet subtly muted tone; it gives the sparkling conclusion to this track a raw edge, without cutting through the cinematic soundscape too sharply.

Once again, if any band feel primed to become the next darlings of the underground music world, it is Labyrinthine Oceans. Between inventive musicianship and compelling delivery, they exist as a point of coalescence, gathering together separate strands of what is musically relevant, and tying them together in a unique and refreshing manner.
