‘…For those hankering for the high hedonism of the 00’s or the melancholic indie drama of the early 10’s, The Marigolds are here to bring you a new spin on it…’
Describing their sound as ‘punk, funk and synthy junk’, The Marigolds have begun to craft themselves the status of a cult favourite band on the Merseyside circuit. Their music combines pure punk and alternative rock heaviness with ridiculously catchy melodies and hooks, and their live performances are nothing short of a whirlwind experience. Their last single was released all the way back in July, but the wait has been one worth weathering.
With its outrageously distorted guitars, thunderous percussion, and playful yet subtly bitter lyricism, ‘Kitchen Party Anthem‘ brings together ideas from the world of 00’s indie sleaze, dance punk, and the modern post-punk renaissance to conjure up something that refuses to adhere to expectations whilst feeling wildly relevant. The immediate bombastic catchiness of the track ensures that you’ll be hitting the replay button, with killer lyrical hooks, such as ‘We we’re dancing in the kitchen to all our favourite tunes/She didn’t know the words but she led on all the moves‘ and ‘I wanna be more like you and less like me‘, compelling you to sing along after only one listen.
It is perhaps those aforementioned bitter undertones, however, that make the track all the more fascinating to listen to. It would have been easy for The Marigolds to have constructed a polished dance punk banger and leave it at that, but the manner in which the instrumental melodies retain a gritty, swaggering tone keeps the track feeling raw and uncompromised. On top of that, the lyrical delivery is intelligently executed, with bars such as ‘I can never be happy/Without you‘ not only bringing a sense of desperation to the hedonistic, free-spirited overtones, but being phrased in a manner that leaves ‘I can never be happy‘ lingering in the air just a little long than anticipated.
The Marigolds remain unpredictable with this new track. Whilst ‘Kitchen Party Anthem‘ continues the big, playful sound that they have so perfectly constructed for themselves, it is indicative of a band not content with pumping out catchy tunes with no depth. For those hankering for the high hedonism of the 00’s or the melancholic indie drama of the early 10’s, The Marigolds are here to bring you a new spin on it; they feel primed to become your next favourite band.
