SINGLE REVIEW: The Matriarchy – Hard To Be A God

’…a retro rock anthem that has been polished up to modern standards, with just enough of a subtle pop flair to get you singing along…’

Between their killer live performances and fantastic debut single, 2024 has already proven to be a success for Liverpool-based The Matriarchy. Not content with simply resting on their laurels, however, the four-piece have been hard at work behind the scenes with producer Leo Craig on their follow-up single, and in doing so have further cemented their reputation as an upcoming outfit well worth your attention.

Hard To Be A God‘ is heaping helping of old-school hard rock goodness. From the get-go, it is clear that the band mean business, with a killer lead guitar riff that chugs with an obnoxious, swaggering energy, soaked with distortion. The gritty verses play incredibly well with the anthemic, catchy choruses incredibly well, as vocalist Charlotte Rhodes evolves her vocals from brooding mantras to infectious, compelling megalomania; the central vocal hook of ‘I want to be a God/I want to be adored‘ is guaranteed to be stuck in your head after merely a single listen.

However, it is perhaps the bridge of this track that proves to be the most compelling, as the band build upwards towards one final cathartic chorus. Chugging guitars and stomping percussion play out alongside some vibrant bass flourishes and steadily crescendoing vocals from Rhodes. The plunge into the last chorus is simply begging you to get a pit started.

For those who perhaps wish rock simply rocked a little harder, The Matriarchy are the perfect band. ‘Hard To Be A God’ feels like a retro rock anthem that has been polished up to modern standards, with just enough of a subtle pop flair to get you singing along. Keep an eye on this band; there’s a big niche that they are filling perfectly.
