SINGLE REVIEW: What Will Be – Singularity

’…an exciting glimpse of a band that can effortlessly merge the progressive with the accessible…’

Following on from two singles in the first two months of 2024, it’s been a quiet year for Manchester outfit What Will Be. That’s not to say that the band have been resting on their laurels however; behind the scenes, the band have been working hard on new music featuring a brand new additional guitarist, and their new single ‘Singularity’ gives us a glimpse into the latest arc of this band’s story.

This is a surprisingly grandiose number from the outfit, truly tapping into the progressive influences that have always been hinted at through their material. Grandiose orchestral elements play off of guitar riffs that duck and weave through compelling melodies; the addition of new lead guitarist Abel Aguado of Cabin Boy Jumped Ship truly rounds out the band’s already driving sound, enabling them to sound bigger than ever before. The choruses in particular here mark some of the band’s finest material to date, as it hurtles by with catchy vocal performances layered against cascading walls of alternative rock.

The sense that the band are more focused and driven than ever before also bleeds into the vocal and lyrical work. Tackling the theme of mental illness, and the stigma and isolation that still surrounds it to this day, the surprisingly catchy lead vocal melody is draped in subtle yet impressive vocal harmonies that bolster the band’s sound; What Will Be have managed to capture the atmosphere of a band far larger than themselves, without sounding melodramatic or over-theatrical.

Singularity‘ caps off a solid run of 2024 singles for the band. What Will Be are clearly still exploring who they are and what direction they would like to travel in, but what they have presented on ‘Singularity‘ is an exciting glimpse of a band that can effortlessly merge the progressive with the accessible. With evident talent and a strong work ethic, What Will Be could very well see their fortunes improved going into 2025.
