SINGLE REVIEW: Quiet Company feat. Max Bemis & Sherri DuPree-Bemis – Cantstanja!

’…this reunion not only feels exciting, but born from a place of necessity for these musicians…’

Author’s Note: This is a fairly old photo of Quiet Company, and not indicative of their current lineup, however new group photos are yet to emerge. They remain handsome devils regardless – Ry 🙂

It has been nearly two years since Austin based outfit Quiet Company called it quits. Despite their output having slowed to a handful of singles in their latter years, the separation came as a surprise to fans; this was a band that not only had written some modern classics, but felt like they had the potential to write many more. Now, that prophecy may well be about to come to fruition, as the band have returned with a new song and the promise of a full reunion show.

You don’t get many comeback singles that are as good as this. ‘Cantstanja!’ perfectly recaptures the wry, acerbic wit that so often marked Quiet Company’s material, in the form of a brilliantly fun yet surprisingly vulnerable ode to the aromantic. The lyricism of Taylor Muse consists of razor-sharp quips that strike out with a theatrical yet self-depreciating tone, such as ‘I’ll never love you but I’ll try/I’ll put my body and my mind into every single lie’ and ‘I’d trade all of the bones and the blood in my body if it would offset the prospect of dying alone!’.

The frenzied shouts and melodic playfulness of Muse are backed up by guest appearances from Max Bemis and Sherri DuPree-Bemis, the latter of whom adds some gorgeous harmonisation to the melodies. All of this is layered atop of electrifyingly funky bass lines, punkish riffing, and rousing brass that has so often been the trademark of Quiet Company’s sound. You truly cannot help but dance along, even after diving into the surprisingly tortured lyrics.

Where this comeback will take Quiet Company is yet to be seen, but the sense that the band has unfinished business has been present since the very moment they called it a day; this reunion not only feels exciting, but born from a place of necessity for these musicians. ‘Cantstanja!’ is proof that there is some fiery life left in this outfit, and the best could still be yet to come.
